17 April 2025How to keep your skin barrier healthy all-year-round:
When it comes to the skin, there’s nothing worse than dry and itchy patches. It’s always in those
hard to reach places and often occurs in autumn and winter. When seasons change, it is a good time
to adapt our skincare routine accordingly. Dry air inside or outside can influence how skin looks and
feels.
The key is to keep your skin barrier happy and healthy at a PH of 4.7-5.5. Ensuring this can protect
your skin from bad bacteria and maintain your natural microbiome.
Here are some good skin habits to maintain and bad ones to avoid throughout the year:
Bad for skin:
- Over-washing: Too much of a good thing is not necessarily good. That squeaky clean feeling
is excellent for your tiles, but on your skin overwashing may strip away natural oils, which
can lead to dryness, irritation, and even a weakened skin barrier. This can leave your skin
more vulnerable to environmental stressors and make it harder to maintain moisture. - Stress: We all know stress is bad for overall health, but did you know it could affect your skin
too? Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can lead to inflammation,
breakouts, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. - Harsh skincare: Make sure you use products your body can handle. You'll know if something
is too harsh for your skin if you experience redness, irritation, dryness, or a burning
sensation.
Good for skin:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water and eat berries, avocados, nuts and fatty fish.
- Exfoliation: Every day millions of skin cells die and are replaced with new ones. Absorb more
of your product by getting rid of the dead cells through exfoliation. Again, less is more. - Extra moisture: During autumn and winter you may need to up moisture levels by changing
from a body lotion to a thicker aqueous cream and from a normal soap to a creamier
cleanser. Similarly, during spring and summer you might not need the heavier moisture and
can go back to a lotion again. Listen to your skin. - SPF: Irrespective of the season, it is good to apply sunblock to protect your skin from the
harmful UV rays. UV exposure can cause premature aging, sunburn, and increase the risk of
skin cancer.
